Our friend Josh Bunch over at Practice CrossFit wrote this amazing bit yesterday. CrossFit gyms seem to be popping up at every corner and While I’m pretty happy with our Rogue equipment, I couldn’t agree more with his premise:
A box isn’t its bars like Batman isn’t his gadgets.
A recent trip to Rogue Fitness made me think some of us have forgotten that. Maybe some of us never knew it to begin with.
It’s not that I don’t love the brushed steel and tons of rubber ripe for a PR, it’s that iron bars do not a prison make, nor Rogue bars a CrossFit.
Without the years of preparation, Batman would be a psycho in a suit with expensive toys. At the first sign of trouble, he’d be a mark in history quickly forgotten. A disorder categorized in some long lost book of psychology.
If your brand new murdered-out rowers with matching gunpowder GHD’s were stolen along with your pretty Olympic discs, would you still have something to offer the athlete in front of? Better yet, would they see through the mirage you were attempting to fool them with?
Self worth parleyed as the latest and greatest in equipment is no substitute for the compassion and knowledge of a great trainer.
Both Batman and great trainers began the same; purpose, skin and bone. Both build legacies that will endure long after metal rusts and glitter fades because they recognize the difference between enhancement, and dependence.
